‘Arsonist’ killed in Jatrabari ‘shootout’

An alleged arsonist was killed in a 'shootout' with detectives following a petrol bomb attack on a truck in Jatrabari area of Dhaka early today.

Hailed from Fatullah in Narayanganj, Rasel Sardar, 28, worked at a mobile servicing centre in Sadarghat area. After miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a truck in Matuail area around 4:30am, a team of detective branch (DB) of police opened fire on them, said Humayun Kabir, a sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station.
Sensing danger, the gang retaliated with bullets that triggered a ‘gunfight’, the OC said. Later, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Sardar when all the criminals fled the scene, said Mosharaf Hossain, a sub-Inspector of the police station.
Police also recovered three petrol bombs and a pistol from the spot. Claiming Sardar innocent, his wife Shefali Begum said her husband had no link with any political parties.
“I have been looking for him at different police stations in Dhaka and Narayanganj as he remained missing since Thursday morning,” she said while talking to The Daily Star at Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the body was kept.
With this killing, the death toll in such incidents rose to 24 since the countrywide blockade began on January 6.
