'Blockade supporter' killed in 'gunfight' with Sitakunda police

One person has died of gunshot wounds sustained during a gunfight between police and suspected blockade supporters at Sitakunda Upazila in Chittagong.

Police arrested five injured blockade supporters following the gunfight at the Upazila's Nunachhorha around 9pm on Saturday. The arrestees, supporters of the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance, had attacked the vehicle of a patrol team with firearms and bombs, Sitakunda Police Station OC Iftekhar Hasan claimed.

One of them, 'Arif', 22, was declared dead around 11:45pm after they were rushed to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), the hospital police outpost's Sub-Inspector Zahirul Islam told bdnews24.com. Police identified the four others as 'Rubel', 20, 'Sohel', 22, 'Habib', 20, 'Parvez', 18. An LG, three rounds of bullets, 10 handmade bombs, two petrol bombs and two litres of petrol were seized from them after the attack, OC Hasan told bdnews24.com.

He said the attackers had ambushed the police patrol team from a roadside swamp at Nunachhorha. "Police retaliated and later arrested the five from there." He said raids were on to nab the other attackers who managed to flee at the time. Meanwhile, a truck was torched by suspected blockade supporters at Chairman Ghata on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway around 9:30pm Saturday. The attackers had hurled petrol bombs at the truck in front of a filling station, said the Sitakunda police OC.
