PM visits Ansar, VDP parade, says won’t bow to the ‘monsters’

Terming troublemakers as ‘monsters’, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned them that they will be suppressed firmly.

“Those who are burning innocent people alive for nothing; are they human beings or monsters?” she said while addressing the parade of the 35th council of Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) at Shafipur in Gazipur’s Kaliakair on Thursday.

“We will not spare these monsters. We will bring back peace by stopping these monsters,” the prime minister said during a violent blockade by BNP. Around 70 people have been killed in violence during the blockade that started on Jan 5. Most of them were burnt alive in petrol bomb attacks on vehicles.

Hasina said the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance was killing innocent people by creating anarchy in the name of movement. “Is it politics? What BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are doing is terror and militancy. “BNP-Jamaat is perpetuating violence when the country is advancing.

They are killing innocent citizens by hurling petrol bombs,” the prime minister said. “They speak about religion but enforced shutdowns-blockade even during Biswa Ijtema and Eid-e-Miladunnabi. “They have pushed the future of 1.5 million SSC (Secondary School Certificate) students into uncertainty.

They want this country to be in darkness,” she added. She noted that the force, Ansar, was given the national flag when Awami League constituted the government in 1996. Hasina said her government was trying to bring down the regularisation time for Ansar personnel from 15 years to nine years.

“We have arranged dearness allowance for all personnel of the Ansar. Last year, 672 women in the Ansar force were given permanent posts,” Hasina said. She gave awards to a number of members of the Ansar and VDP for their courage and service. She arrived in the parade ground around 10:15am and received salutes while visiting the parade.
