The Cabinet on Monday approved the proposal for setting up of a new Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Post and Telecommunications Division, aiming to give necessary technical and professional suggestions and supports to the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry on policy making.
The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the Cabinet approved the proposal for creating a new department with 238 permanent posts.
There will be some 7,536 more temporary posts which would gradually be abolished with the retirement of the existing officials of BCS Telecommunications cadres and the employees of the now defunct BTTB. The new department will be headed by a Director General.
With the Cabinet approval of the formation of DoT, the Cabinet Secretary said, many complications on the services of BCS Telecommunications Cadre and other related matters would be resolved.
The Cabinet without approving the draft of the 'Public Corporations (Management-Coordination) Bill, 2015 proposed by the Industries Ministry, directed the six-member Council to review the necessity of the proposed law in the current perspective.
